This is from the heart of the village, just below Maltroie; the soil gets heavier, lending itself to Pinot Noir. It’s all destemmed and aged in traditional Burgundian pièces. The nose has personality, with funky forest fruit and an appealing typical red Chassagne goût de terroir. There’s sweet smoke, red fruit coulis and almost dark chocolate to finish. Drink 2022-2030.

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chênes (Rouge), coming from tank, feels very tight and a little broody on the nose, maybe because it had just been transferred. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy, ripe red and black fruit, good acidity with a rounded, dark cherry and blackcurrant finish that feels silky smooth. Enjoy this over the next 4-6 years.

Very dense purple, ripe fruit, just short of cooked. Very generous fruit on the palate, gravelly texture, some firm tannins, then acidity but cooked red fruit comes in behind. Intense but I would prefer a touch fresher. Old vines in cordon
